Saturday Book Reviews

Here are a few books that I was able to read this week complements of NetGalley. The first one is for the YA/NA crowd (technically its YA but the themes make it suitable for both I think) and the other two are children's picture books.

Poor Little Dead GirlsPoor Little Dead Girls by Lizzie Friend
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Sadie is a typical middle class girl who on scholarship at a prestigious boarding school. Going to school with the rich and famous is interesting enough but when she is kidnapped by someone in a black hood she is plunged into a world of secrets and deception. She must uncover what is going on and how it somehow seems to connect to her own mother's tragic past.
I had no trouble getting into this book. It slightly slow as the story was set in motion but it picked up pace and had enough drama to make it interesting. I never really connected with the story or the characters though. While it was enjoyable enough to read I felt it was missing the extra spark that makes a book grab my attention.

Zebra Stripes Go Head to Toe

Zebra Stripes Go Head to Toe by Sheryl Shapiro
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I enjoyed this book's cheerful illustrations and I plan to read it with my toddler. He loves pictures of real children. I must add that the concept of this book had me a bit confused. I expected it to be more about strips and lines and it seemed to jump around a bit.

This book is exactly was I was expecting it to be, which in this case is a good thing!  It is a sweet collection of classic nursery rhymes.  The illustrations are beautiful.  I loved all the subtle patterns and texture woven it.  It reminded me a bit of a scrapbook.  I enjoyed reading some of the nursery rhymes from my childhood and this book is a fun way to share them with the next generation.
