What's Up Wednesday

It's time for What's Up Wednesday!

What I'm Reading  I would be reading The Near Witch but my Amazon order is being infuriatingly slow.  Maybe today will be the day it finally arrives.  I'm still reading The Great Gatsby for my chapter a day classic.  This makes it week three and its only nine chapters.  Please don't do the math...  I love the book but I seem to only fit in a few pages at a time.  My read right before I go to bed book this week is Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman and my read for a bit during nap time book is Stranded by Dani Pettrey.  The kids and I are reading The Courage of Sarah Noble by Alice Dalgliesh.
What I'm Writing  I'm still revising Slumber.  I finally made some progress!  I thought I had my book for NaNo picked out but now I have another story in my head and I don't know which one to use.  The first one is a YA fairytale retelling that I've been dying to write for over a year now.  It is a bit dark and the setting is encrusted in snow and ice.  The other is a NA contemporary about a young military wife (wonder where I got that idea lol). Is it still NA if the main character is married?  I haven't seen any like that yet but some of us do get married really young and balance the whole figuring out who we are period with marriage and children. Oh decisions, how I loathe thee.
What Inspires Me Right Now Yesterday I went for an early morning run.  It was still dark.  I heard a man and his son outside talking about the stars and the constellations.  I think he may have been in uniform but it was to dark to tell for sure. I thought it was wonderful to see a father taking whatever time he had to spend with his son.  Time is precious.
What Else I've Been Up To  My husband and I have been watching Sleepy Hollow.  I didn't expect to like it so much but it is a very entertaining show.  I look forward Ichabod's dialogue all week.  Its amazing!  During the afternoon's I've been trying to get the kids outside to play.  It is still warm out but the sea breeze is just cool enough to make it feel like fall.  I love it!  I wish I didn't have to be inside but its much easier to make dinner when one is indoors.
What have you been up to?

  1. I really like Sleep Hollow too. It's a bit strange at times, but Ichabod's dialogue is priceless. My hubs isn't as into it as me though.
I've got two SNI's roaming around my head too, but I think I've decided which will be better to try for NaNo. Here's hoping I picked right!

    1. It is a bit odd but it is quirky which I love. Good luck on NaNo! I'm seriously thinking of my fairy tale one but I still am conflicted lol.

  2. Daddy/kid moments are the best.<3

I love the sound of a story encrusted in snow and ice, so I vote that one. :)

    1. Thanks for the vote :) I like how much room my imagination has in a fairytale setting. It will probably win for my NaNo book.

  4. Grrrr...just hit the "sign out" button instead of "publish" and lost my comment. Take Two: I think my favourite Ichabod comment was the one about all of the Starbucks everywhere: "Is it a law?" Too funny! I keep waiting for them to finally get the guy some new clothes.

I love both of your NaNo ideas! I've always kind of wanted to take an obscure fairy tale and write a full-blown YA of it. Sounds like fun! I suppose I should finish the projects I currently have going though. Have a great week, Sarah!

    1. I've been wondering about the clothes too. You think he'd need to wash them every now and again or that he'd realize he's way behind the times.
The fairy tale I have in mind is a common one but I'm hoping I can give it a traditional yet unique spin. Some of my favorite books as a child were redone fairy tales.

  5. I'm scared of Sleepy Hollow, but glad you're enjoying it. I agree, dads spending time with their sons, especially educational time, is touching. My husband is so great with our son. I'm convinced this is why my son is so well adjusted.

Everything I've heard about NA is that it's all about voice and the focus, so I think yours should work. Fairytale retellings are awesome! Beauty is one of my faves.

    1. It isn't as scary as I thought it would be, more quirky but a few places are intense. Dads are so important in little boys lives, its nice to see some taking it seriously and enjoying it too.
That makes sense, YA being primarily about the voice.
Oh and I love Beauty! Such an amazing book.

  6. Aw, that sounds like a cute father/son moment you overheard ^_^

Hooray for editing. Good luck choosing your NaNo project.

Hope it's a great week for you!

  8. I feel like NA is such a new genre the rules are still being defined (and expanded). Think about YA. There are SO MANY different sub-genres and even within each sub-genre stories can go in a million different directions. So I definitely think a young married woman is acceptable in NA. Heck, Bella and Edward got married in the last Twilight book and that was YA.

  9. I love overhearing sweet father son moments. :) My hubby and son are stuck together like glue. They have a brilliant relationship and it never fails to make me smile.

  10. My hubby and I are stocking up our Sleepy Hollow episodes to watch on Halloween. We thought it would be a fun way to spend the evening. I loved your description of the father and son pointing out the constellations, and I agree that time is precious. It seems to speed up all the more when you have kids, I think. Have fun choosing a NaNo project. Both sound like great ideas!

    1. Ooo, sounds like a spooktacular plan :)
Thanks! I'm hoping that whatever one I choose is a big enough to carry me through a whole book.

  11. Well, you know how I feel about THE NEAR WITCH, so I really, really hope Amazon comes through for you. :) It's been funky with books for me, too, by the way. Not sure what's going on with that ... but I don't like it! ;)

Good luck picking your next WIP. Both of those ideas sound great. I'm a sucker for fairytale retellings, but the young army wife story sounds unique.

Kudos on getting up early enough to run that it was still dark out! I am terrible at getting up early to exercise. If it's for a hike or a big climb, I can do it ... but for things like running? I tend to hit the snooze. So yes, I'm very impressed! :)

    Have a great week, Sarah!

    1. I really hope that it comes soon! I've been eagerly checking my mail box for a week now...
I will probably go with the fairy tale. I want to write the other one someday but I'm more in the mood for something magical :)
I really don't like to get up early but its the only way I can fit a run in most days and I feel so much better when I do.

  12. Sleepy Hollow is a great movie. I didn't know there's a show.

I love the title of your WIP.
