What's Up Wednesday

Its time for What's Up Wednesday!

What I'm Reading  I'm still on my reading binge but I think I'm slowly coming out of it.  I don't want to come all the way out of it though!  Its wonderful to be lost in a book.  This week I finished reading Crown of Midnight by Sarah Maas.  It is my favorite book so far this year.  One of the things that I loved most was that it is written in third person pov, not first.  My WIP is in third so I found this to be very encouraging.  I also finished Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo (and ran right to the library to get the sequel!) and If There is Something to Desire by Vera Pavlova.   I am now reading Cinder by Marissa Meyer and then will start Siege and Storm, or vice versa... I'm not sure yet.  I made progress on my chapter a day classic, Anna Karenina, worked on some exercises from Writing 21st century fiction by Donald Maas and read some random poetry.

What I'm Writing  I set a goal.  I want to finish my current WIP by March first.  Before that can happen I need to get the evil witch in my story to turn my MC back into a human, or find someone else to do the job.  I did make some progress this week, just not enough to get where I need to be for poor MC to be rescued.  I am so ready for her to be human.  It is much easier to write.

What Inspires Me Right Now  I've been haunting a sweet little Carribean style coffee shop on the weekends.  It leaves me relaxed and ready to write every time!  The last few times I have brought a book to read but I think I'm going to start writing there when I get the chance.  It is across the street from the Gulf and has palm trees right by the windows.  Oh, and it has great coffee and cute surf board tables!  When it is warmer I plan to take my coffee for a walk down the pier.

What Else I'm Up To I'm making hot cocoa and enjoying the Florida snow!  I knew it was suppose to be cold and icy today with a chance of snow but whoops and hollers from my oldest son confirmed that there really was snow.  He misses Montana and its snowy winters.  Thirty minutes after waking up my three children and I were outside.  Singing, dancing and slip sliding may have taken place :)  My two year old has decided that he likes his winter coat and won't take it off.  He has the hood on and I have been informed that he is now a turtle.

Besides dancing in the snow I've been working on my 2014 goal to live intentionally.  The book Saying Goodbye to Survival Mode by Crystal Paine has helped me make some wonderful progress in this direction.  I've identified my priorities and am now in the process of weeding out anything that keeps me from them.  Its liberating.

What have you been up to?

  1. Good luck finishing your WiP by your deadline. I can imagine writing from a human perspective would be a lot easier than whatever form your MC is currently stuck in, so I hope you are able to change her back soon. Have a great week!

    1. Yes, I definitely have more experience to fall back on when I'm writing from a human perspective :) Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Love that you set a deadline. Maybe I should do this. Does it feel like the deadline is helping? How intriguing that your MC needs to be turned back to human. I would like to know more about this story. I hope you find a way to change her back!

    1. It seems to help me be aware of the time passing. Without a deadline I don't always realize how many days I don't work on my WIP, with it I always have my goal in the back of my mind so I'm more motivated to sit down and get to work. My WIP takes place on the edge of a traditional fairy tale (my main character is not the main character in the original) so there is a decent amount of fairy tale magic:) I'm hoping that I can pull it off. It is harder to write than anything else I have done.

  4. Well, that's definitely a positive reaction to the snow lol. So weird that it snowed in Florida. That coffee shop sounds wonderful. I've never actually tried writing in a coffee shop, but people seem to love it. Maybe I should give it a try sometime. That's great that you've set a goal for yourself with your WiP. I need to get back to doing that again. I hope you find that breakthrough you're looking for this week!

    1. We all miss snow lol. Florida is a big change from Montana where we lived before. I have trouble finding uninterrupted time at home so I think writing away from home now and again might help me reach my goals. Thanks for stopping by!

    1. I would highly recommend Say Goodbye to Survival Mode by Crystal Paine. It has helped me take the idea of living intentionally and turn it into something I can actually visualize and do. Love it! I'm happy that I found a place of my own so to speak, I tried hanging out at Starbucks but I prefer the personality of small businesses.

  6. I have never gotten into coffee shop writing. I would love to go in with a friend and write for a few hours, that would be fun. I get far more done by myself, on my couch, with fewer distractions. Though I'm better at learning to write anywhere if I have a device that works for writing.

Good luck with your goals. March sounds do-able. I learned a really cool word count strategy from a fellow RWA writer. She took 5 different writing sessions and recorded the word count, then averaged. She found she usually wrote an average of say 30 mins at a time and could write x words. Then she calculated how many sessions she'd need to get to her word count gaol. If you can squeeze in a few more sessions, even if it's 15-30 mins, you know you can product x amount of words, that gets closer than trying to cram for the weekend. This was a revelation to me. I hope you succeed!

    1. I meant cram writing in during the weekend, which was my old strategy. Just write for hours and hours. Now i write more regularly for smaller chunks of time and get more done than with only the marathon sessions when I was "in the mood."

  8. We are just trying to keep warm! We didn't get snow, just ice and frozen rain, but the kids have been playing in it.

    1. Ours was more ice than true snow but it made the ground white :) Its fun watching kids enjoy the magic of winter.

  9. I can't believe you guys got snow in Florida! I mean, I know that happens once in a blue moon, but it's still kind of bizarre. I'm glad you're enjoying it! You've been reading an awesome selection of books lately. Sarah J. Maas, Leigh Bardugo, and Marissa Meyer are all authors I enjoy. No big surprise there. Your Caribbean coffee shop sounds like a fun place to write! Have a great week!

    1. I think the whole state is in shock lol. I think the last time it snowed in this area was 1989. Its funny how the whole area shuts down for a bit of snow and ice down here but I've been loving the snow days.
The problem with all of those authors is that they are too good and they all write series... I may never get anything else accomplished lol. Thanks for stopping by!

  10. What a time to be starting The Lunar Chronicles! CRESS comes out next week--that's book three. I really hope you love CINDER as much as I did, but be prepared to have SCARLET and CRESS vying for your attention once you've finished! ;)

I'm glad your family's enjoying the snow--especially in Florida. It's strange enough having this much snow here in E. NC, but down there it must be really freaky!

Have a wonderful writing week, Sarah.

    1. Hehe, that is good timing :) I read some of Cinder last night and I love it so far. I should reserve the next one at the library ASAP.
It is interesting watching everyones reactions to the weather. We are on our second snow day now. Everything is closed!
