March Writing Goals

I learned something about myself in February.  Daily goals stress me out.  If I get a little behind I feel like a loser.  It doesn't matter if I did extra on a different day, I still feel like I failed.  This month I am going to set my goals for  for the entire month, not a goal for each day.
My goals are:
  • write 30,000 words on my novel
  • make a basic outline for my next book (I keep thinking about it, I may as well write it down!)
  • read two YA books
I have a few other things I would like to accomplish but I am not going to set them as goals.  If I set to many I will stress myself out and probably not achieve any of them. I am slowly working through some books on writing and I will continue those.  I will also continue my book review books.
Maybe I should write out monthly, not daily, house keeping goals too....  Its worth a try!

  1. Thats a great observation Sarah, you've hit the nail on the head, even when you begin to catch up, you didn't make your previous goal.

I like to think that the daily 'goal' is more of a 'guideline' to get me to where I want to be weekly.

Good luck with the 30,000 words, we've got ~the same goal this month. See you at the dojo ;)

  2. I so agree with you Sarah. Goals, something which seems like would be so helpful, can be dementedly problematic to the psyche. I do like the new goals you've set.

I do miss writing with you. My WIP, which I had set such an easy goal it's crazy (put something on paper everyday), has been put on hold because of marketing and getting an "in-between" book of flash fiction stories and poetry critiqued and published. I think my WIP needs to marinate to see where it's going. I could force it, but right now is not the time.

I applaud you and wish you luck with your new goals.

    1. Hmmm, not so great. I'm about 3k away from where I should be right now, since my goal word count keeps growing. I want to finish the WIP this month so if my chapters run over estimate, that makes my goal that much further away. I'd like to blame the day job, but I wasn't too effective this past weekend, hopefully I learned my lesson.

I hope things are going better for you Sarah.
