Q is for Quilt

I am writing a children's story for every day of the A to Z Challenge. Here is today's story!

“Ahhhhchooo.”

Oh no.  Ellie’s nose was itchy again.

She reached for a tissue.

“Are you feeling any better?”  Momma asked.

“No. I feel terrible.”

Momma kissed her on the forehead.

“Poor baby.  You have a fever.  Come on; let’s make you a cozy nest.”

“With books and blankies and pillows?”

“Yes, with books and blankies and pillows.”

Momma scooped Ellie up and carried her to her bed.

“I’ll be right back.”Momma said.

Ellie stared at her ceiling.  She could hear Sam and Carlos running back and forth across the yard.

They were making gorilla noises.

“Here are some extra pillows Ellie.  Do you want some music?”

“Yes please, Momma. Could you open my curtains so I can watch the boys?”

“I don’t know, I don’t want you running around right now. “

“I would never, ever do that.  I just want to watch so I’m not so lonely.”

“Ok, how’s that?”  Momma placed a pillow behind Ellie’s head and pulled the curtains back just enough for her to see the boy’s leap out of a tree.

Ellie shivered.  She was so cold.

Momma tucked a blanket over her.

It was one of Ellie’s favorites.  It made her think of lacey princess dresses.

Ellie shivered again.

“Momma, this blankie isn’t warm enough.”

Momma pulled out a thick fleecy one.

“Is that any better?”

Ellie sneezed.

“No. Now my toes feel all sweaty.

“I think I know just the thing.  It will take me a minute to get it.  It’s at the bottom of my trunk.”

“The trunk that belonged to your Grandma?”

“Yes, that’s the one.”

When Momma came back she had something big and fluffy in her arms.

“Is it a blankie?”

“Yes, it is a quilt.  My Grandma made it for me when I was just a little girl.”

“Like me?”

“Just like you.  My momma used to tuck me under it whenever I was feeling sick.”

Momma pulled it all the way up to Ellie’s chin.

“It’s pretty.  It looks like a flower garden.”

“It does.”  Momma said.  “How does it feel?”

“Perfect.”

Ellie was almost asleep when she heard something tapping on her window.

Carlos and Sam were making silly faces at her.

Ellie waved at them and snuggled up under her Momma’s quilt.  Not even a princess could have a cozier nest.

  10. My "Q" was also involving a quilt, although of a far different sort.

    Nice light-hearted prose.
